Human beings regulate life in the world they have created for themselves. To this end, customs, rituals, “principles,” and so-called ethical and moral codes of conduct are established by those in power, often with the help of the currently dominant religion with its respective dogmas and tenets. To enforce these, all manner of laws are enacted, which the inhabi-tants must abide by. In this context, people like to speak of fundamental rights, of freedom, democra-cy, equal treatment, and justice — since these prin-ciples are generally regarded as valuable and worth striving for. Moreover, efforts are made to achieve ever greater scientific and technical progress, all for the benefit of humankind, it is said.
But why doesn’t any of this really work? And where is there a system that does justice to all people? Where can one find peace, equality, freedom, unity, and justice among human beings?
Despite all the fine-sounding speeches — which are usually delivered in a media-savvy way — and de-spite all the progress made, reality presents a rather bleak picture:

People continue to divide, fight, torment and destroy one another just as they always have. Wherever one looks, there is discord and quarrelling in families; disputes with neighbors and coworkers; there is social injustice, oppression, and exploitation; unrest and a growing tendency toward violence, right up to murder, manslaughter, and war among nations. And a brutal, worldwide war of un-imaginable proportions is being waged against ani-mals and nature.
